Uncontrollable Laughter: Blog 1

Uncontrollable laughter: Blog 1

One instance where I experienced uncontrollable laughter was this past summer when I worked for American Airlines in Global Marketing. I had the opportunity to travel for free all summer which made for some interesting airport stories. One weekend I was taking a trip to Bermuda and was waiting to board my plane in Miami, Florida.  What should seem like a normal experience actually turned into a highly unexpected one. One of the passengers waiting to board the flight seemed to have an extreme fear of flying, so as we were all waiting by the gate, the lady started to have sudden deep breathing problems and began to look around frantically at all of the others passengers because I believe she felt claustrophobic. Her husband seemed to know that it was a possibility she would start feeling this way, so he began to slowly make his way to the bathroom. Well, funny enough, he made it back just in time to see what had happened moments before. As the boarding process began, the lady began to scream about why she couldn’t board this plane and how her husband was forcing her to get on the plane against her will. The gate agent proceeded to call security over to assist the woman as she was going on a rampant rage and it wasnt looking like it would stop anytime soon. So about the time the security guards from TSA showed up, the husband rolled out of the bathroom. It was obvious to him what had just occurred because he was being swarmed by security guards – security guards who asked if he was the husband forcing the woman on the plane. The man then politely declined that he had never seen that woman before in his life and came over to get in line to board with the rest of us. Thats when I and many other passengers began to laugh uncontrollably in the corner of the airport gate. Luckily a few moments later, security finally had calmed the lady down a bit and decided it was necessary for her to go back through security before they deemed it safe to let her actually board the plane. When she came back from security, she really didn’t want to have anything to do with her husband – shocking.  But, once her husband told her how funny everyone thought it was, she seemed to join in on his hysterical laughter. I had never experienced anything so hilarious at an airport in my life, so it is definitely a memory that I’ll keep around for a while. I hope the lady and her husband know how much joy they caused at an airport that day – hopefully they get just as much laughter from it too.

  1. Thanks for posting. I am glad the woman found some humor in her fear of flying. Maybe the husband knew how she would finally react. Still, a strange mix of embarrassed laughing and humorous laughing.

  2. I have had my fair share of funny airport moments, but I think this one tops them all. While I was reading this, I definitely thought the husband - sensing what was about to happen - was going to help his wife. The fact that he not only went to the bathroom during her breakdown, and then they both declined to communicate with the other throughout the boarding process was a twist I didn't see coming and am giggling just thinking about it happening in real life.
